Part 1 of our 3-Part Webinar Series on Corrosion Testing

Atmospheric corrosion, where metals are oxidized in a thin film of moisture on the metal surface, is a significant issue for the integrity of metals in outdoor service environments as well as a key challenge for coating materials that protect metals. This webinar will cover the fundamentals of atmospheric corrosion of metals and serves as an introduction to the phenomena that laboratory accelerated corrosion testing is meant to address.

This webinar will first give a brief introduction to the thermodynamic and chemical principles that underlie atmospheric corrosion, including electrochemistry and acid/base reactions.

Next, we'll present the wide variety of often-complex corrosive behaviors that can be observed in service environments, including free corrosion, pitting, exfoliation, and crevice and filiform corrosion.

Following that, we'll review the variety of strategies used widely for mitigation of corrosive behavior, including protective coatings, galvanization, and passivation processes.
